RuneScape Reignited launches on December 2, 2026 as a permanent new character type inside the existing RuneScape. It starts with a separate economy and hiscores, while existing characters, now called Veterans, retain their progression. Reignited is distinct from the new MMO project currently called RS4.

The October 3 announcement and FAQ explain which activities the two character types share and where progression stays separate. The current RuneScape experience is available on PC and mobile; Reignited is a new way into that game, rather than a separate console release.

Watch the official Reignited reveal

The 71-second trailer comes from RuneScape’s official channel. Its December 2 date concerns Reignited, not the separate RS4 project.

What can Reignited and Veteran characters do together?

Jagex calls Reignited a character type, with new characters offered a choice between the established Veteran economy and the fresh Reignited economy. Veteran progress is retained, and characters cannot switch between these types.

ActivityOfficial interaction rule
Play on existing Veteran worldsBoth character types can join
Play on Reignited-only worldsReignited characters only
ChatBoth types can talk to one another
Join clans and homesteadsBoth types can belong together
Trade itemsOnly within the same character type
Use the Grand ExchangeSeparate markets, fixed by character type
Share a boss instanceOnly within the same character type

Shared worlds therefore do not mean shared markets or unrestricted group bossing. Jagex says future content will be developed for all character types, rather than exclusively for Reignited.

The fresh hiscores also create a new progression race. The announced Hall of Legends will commemorate qualifying world-first achievements with permanent character statues. That does not reset the achievements or items of existing Veteran characters.

Reignited has no scheduled end date. The FAQ says there is no predetermined economy merger, while leaving future options open. “Permanent character type” should not be read as a promise that its interaction rules can never change.

Free access window: December 2–12

Full Reignited access without Membership runs December 2–12, 2026. This is a launch offer for Reignited characters, separate from the mode’s permanent status.

The FAQ says a Reignited character requires its own membership, comparable to Ironman. Existing Veteran membership should therefore not be assumed to cover an additional Reignited character. Jagex has not supplied an exact start or cutoff hour in the announcements checked.

No Treasure Hunter, with cosmetics still available

The official Reignited page rules out Treasure Hunter, and Jagex describes the fresh progression system as having no paid progression. Treasure Hunter was already removed from RuneScape in January 2026; its absence is not exclusive to Reignited.

The FAQ expressly allows cosmetic overrides through the marketplace, while excluding Radiant Stars for Reignited characters. Membership also remains part of the model. The announcement does not establish that every optional purchase, including bonds, disappears.

Jagex also says it will prohibit gold swapping into or out of Reignited, with more anti-cheat and rules information due before launch.

Adventure Guide, remastered quests and plugin rollout

December 2 also brings the Adventure Guide and the first stage of the remastered player journey. The RuneFest roadmap describes the guide as optional, helping players find suitable activities from their first steps through the endgame. It preserves the choice to explore independently.

The early journey work covers environments, selected early quests and encounters, skill interactions and interface clutter. Further remaster stages, Parts II and III, are planned for 2027.

Plugin support has a separate rollout. The RS Plugin Beta begins October 6, 2026, initially with five selected tools: Quest Helper, Menu Entry Swapper, Tilemarkers, Entity Hider and Job Gauges. Players will browse, install and manage available tools through the in-game RS Plugin Hub.

The launch-page description presents integrated plugins as part of the Reignited experience. The detailed roadmap currently establishes a limited beta, with access instructions due on October 6. It does not promise arbitrary third-party plugins or a complete final December catalogue.

Reignited and RS4 are different projects

ProjectConfirmed status
RuneScape ReignitedDecember 2, 2026; permanent fresh-start character type in current RuneScape, with separate economy and hiscores
RS4Working title for a separate RuneScape MMO in early development, built in Unreal Engine; no specific release window

On its official RS4 page, Jagex says the new MMO is still a few years away and is intended to sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and Dragonwilds. That wording does not establish a release year, engine version or platform list.

The separate survival game also has a Dragonwilds Luminance update planned for December 2026. Its announcement gives a month, while Reignited has the specific December 2 date; the two should not be treated as the same release.

Before Reignited launches, the remaining practical details include the launch hour, fuller anti-cheat rules, the finished Adventure Guide and remaster previews, and the plugin catalogue after beta testing. For other game announcements and updates, browse Gaming.
