HBO has ordered a Crazy Rich Asians sequel series with eight episodes and four returning film stars. The October 8 announcement names Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng as series regulars, with Michelle Yeoh recurring. Adele Lim will serve as showrunner.

HBO Max’s official announcement video says production starts in 2027. That is a filming timetable, not a premiere year: HBO has not announced a release date.

Which cast members are returning?

HBO’s confirmed cast has two different billing categories:

ActorAnnounced series status
Constance WuSeries regular
Henry GoldingSeries regular
Ronny ChiengSeries regular
Michelle YeohRecurring

The announcement says the actors will reprise their film roles. It does not specify how many episodes each will appear in. In particular, recurring billing for Yeoh should not be read as a promise that she appears in every episode.

This is the announced returning group, rather than a complete cast list. HBO has not named Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Ken Jeong or Harry Shum Jr. in this series-order release. Their absence from it does not establish that they will never return.

Eight episodes instead of a second movie

HBO describes the project as a one-hour original drama, continuing after the events of the 2018 film. Lim confirms the eight-episode format in the press release. It is a television continuation, rather than a remake of the first movie’s story.

The episode count gives the adaptation more space than a single feature, but HBO has not supplied individual runtimes or an episode schedule. Nor does this announcement establish the formal status of every previously discussed sequel-film project. The confirmed production here is the HBO series.

What will the sequel adapt?

Kevin Kwan’s bestselling books are the source material, and the creative team says the series picks up where the film left off. HBO has not published a detailed plot synopsis or identified which storylines from China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems it will use.

That distinction matters for readers looking for an adaptation guide: a post-film setting is confirmed, while a chapter-by-chapter mapping to the later novels is not. A specific book plot should not yet be treated as a television spoiler.

Who is making the series?

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the film, is showrunner and an executive producer. Other executive producers include Kevin Kwan, Jon M. Chu, Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. HBO and Warner Bros. Television are co-producing.

Chu is credited as the film’s director and an executive producer of this series. The announcement does not confirm that he will direct its episodes. Lim’s role as showrunner is the clearest confirmed creative leadership detail.

When will it premiere, and where can you watch?

The official HBO Max video confirms production in 2027, but supplies no premiere date. There is no announced release year, Swedish catalog listing or territory-by-territory rollout in the checked series-order material.

For now, a release-calendar date would confuse production with availability. Follow our TV & Streaming coverage for a premiere announcement when HBO provides one.
