QSSR brings AI upscaling to standard PS5, starting with Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. Sony announced it on October 1, 2026. PS5 Pro’s PSSR remains a separate, higher-tier solution.

What is QSSR?

Quick Spectral Super Resolution comes from Sony and AMD’s Project Amethyst collaboration. Sony describes a streamlined neural network and implementation tuned for PS5, targeting improved detail and image stability.

Upscaling reconstructs the displayed image from the game’s rendering input. Sony’s PSSR explanation describes AI analysis at pixel level. A reconstructed output should therefore not be confused with a game rendering every pixel at the display’s native resolution.

QSSR vs PSSR: do you need PS5 Pro?

For these QSSR implementations, no. Sony positions QSSR for standard PS5 and retains PSSR as its higher-quality PS5 Pro tier.

The shared research background does not establish identical output. Sony’s February PSSR update describes changes to both its neural network and reconstruction algorithm; the October announcement describes another implementation suited to different hardware. Neither announcement supplies a controlled QSSR-versus-PSSR benchmark from which to calculate a performance gap.

Which games support it?

Sony confirms these launch implementations:

GameSupport addedDelivery
Marvel’s WolverineOctober 1, 2026Game patch; extra graphics option
Ghost of YōteiOctober 1, 2026Game patch; extra graphics option

Install the latest game update, then check its graphics options. Sony’s announcement does not specify an exact menu path or label. These are game patches; a console update alone does not establish support throughout your library.

What do the developers claim?

Insomniac’s Mike Fitzgerald describes clearer, more stable imagery in Wolverine’s Madripoor and Shinjuku. Sucker Punch’s Jasmin Patry highlights fine detail and temporal stability in Yōtei. These are developer statements, not Red Reactions test results.

Will other games get QSSR?

Sony plans to offer it broadly to developers. That is not a promise that every existing or future PS5 game will adopt it. Check each game’s own update notes before assuming support.
