Light spoiler note: This article discusses the setup of X-Men ’97 Season 2 and Apocalypse’s role without revealing the finale’s major twists.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 is now complete on Disney+. The nine-episode season ended on August 12, 2026 with Episode 9, “Survival of the Fittest,” following a three-episode premiere on July 1 and weekly releases after that.

Marvel’s official Season 2 material framed the story around the X-Men being scattered across different eras in time while mutant intolerance continued to rise back in the 1990s. Apocalypse became the season’s central threat as the team fought to find its way home.

The nine-episode count makes Season 2 one episode shorter than Season 1. Marvel and Disney have confirmed that count, but have not publicly tied the shorter order to a specific behind-the-scenes cause, so there is no reason to turn production speculation into fact.

X-Men ’97 Season 3 Is Set for 2027

Season 3 was already in development before Season 2 premiered. Marvel confirmed at New York Comic Con 2025 that another season was in the works, and the timetable has since become clearer.

Brad Winderbaum, Marvel’s Head of Television, Animation, Comics & Franchise, has said Season 3 is planned for 2027. No exact month or premiere date has been announced.

Production is also well advanced. In a post-Season 2 interview, supervising producer and director Jake Castorena said the final Season 3 episode had been sent out for animation and that the team was already receiving completed animation back. Work on Season 4 is also underway.

Matthew Chauncey, known for his work on What If…?, is the head writer for Season 3, succeeding Beau DeMayo, who wrote the first two seasons.

For now, the firm takeaway is simple: Season 2 is finished, all nine episodes are available on Disney+, and X-Men ’97 is expected to return in 2027. Marvel has not announced a specific Season 3 premiere date yet.
